Dear K and B:

I hope you are doing well. Thank you for your additions of 'pellas onto ccmixter, and for your posting of stems here. As you know, folks have enjoyed and actively remixed the work.

I write to suggest a different kind of sample pack, to be posted either here or at the mixter (or, ideally, both places). This is different kind of sample pack, aimed at the synth/sampler user.

Although I do remix songs, I tend to more often sample from tones and sounds for use in creating songs and sounds entirely disparate from the source material. For this purpose, a traditional "song" or even a "melody stem" is of less use than a single (fairly dry) pitch, note or chord sustained for a few seconds.

It's a fun part of the "sharing economy" to be able to quote, with attribution, from an artist whose work one enjoys. However, the goal here is not to do the gurdonark version of "Rubidoux", so much as to go in different directions. Because K uses so many interesting guitar tunings and also because K. has an idiosyncratic vocal style,
a synth/sampler friendly set of sounds in a sample pack might work like this:

a. each sound would be 2 to 7 seconds, and sustain a single note or chord
b. each sound might be an interesting guitar tuning, or a collection of single sustained notes sung by Kristin or other instruments K plays
c. the pack would be very short wave files rather than mp3s
d. rather than CC BY NC, the license would be CC BY or even PD, as these are not
melodies or songs or anything, but just building blocks to be as unencumbered as possible.

I can and do cut stems myself from longer tracks, so I'm not saying that any of this is essential.

But I know y'all are cutting edge on these things, and I thought I'd share an idea.
It need not be anything elaborate, and I'd not suggest it if I had in mind anything time consuming to speak of, but a five or ten sound "sample pack" of very short things along this line would be a benefit to synth artists like me at little cost in time or intellectual property. I'd even take the resulting pack, build 7 songs, and post the resulting album CC BY for free download at jamendo :), to keep the sharing going.

Count this all in the realm of suggestion rather than anything else--and best winter wishes to you both.

best,

Will the current stems for Speedbath remain up once the next series of CASH tracks happens?

Thanks!
