Hello all!
Got home last night (safe & sound, but very tired) after my jaunt to NYC. I even ran into to Bernie at JFK terminal 2. Had the time of my life--really quite a surreal experience, I keep looking at the pictures to make sure it really happened.
Thank you to Kristin, Dave & Bernie for touring. To Billy for saying I was a great fan(!, and the hugs in Cardiff were a treasure...
Thank you to Andrew for your hospitality, Owen for watching out for me, & Allister for answering my silly questions. I meet so many great people at each show--thanks for being so awesome!
Thinking about this is making work tolerable today...
Love,
Anita

Glad you're having a great time of it Anita - the least we can all do considering you've travelled all that way is to make you feel welcome when you get here.

You don't say what your interests are, but here is a website with some ideas..

Mike is right - I booked my trains back in August, and to get from Manchester to Glasgow on the Monday and then Glasgow back home to Letchworth on the Tuesday cost a grand total of £34! But you DO have to pick your trains. Email me and I'll tell you which ones I'll be on.

As for Ethical Paul, I don't think he drank enough beer while we were teaching him. "Dardgy" isn't bad, though...

Anita

It looks like lifts may well be available, but if you are intending to do any travel by train, there are great savings to be made by booking in advance via Thetrainline.com
For instance the journey that Owen refers to, for a one-way ticket from Manchester to Glasgow if you buy a ticket on the day, you’ll pay about £60, but via that website it is only just over £20. You have to name your train time and if you miss it, the ticket is not valid on another train, but it is usually worth it.
I'm sure you can book tickets in the US and pick them up from the machines at the stations over here.

Cheers

I'm doing London and Holmfirth this time around. I'm actually not doing Manchester because it already clashes with a gig that I'd booked beforehand (real shame as that's almost walking distance for me! :)

As for transport, I'm heading back on the bus from Holmfirth to Huddersfield and there's a late train back to Manchester from there, so Anita might want to book a hotel room in Manchester on Friday night maybe and head from there out and about for Saturday and Sunday daytime and see some sights before the Sunday night gig. I'm sure plenty of us can give you some cracking ideas

(and Vinyl Exchange in Manchester is well worth a visit whilst you're there)

Hi Anita

I don't know if I'm going to be much use to you for lifts as I am only going to the Manchester and Holmfirth gigs in the UK (Dublin too but that's in Eire)however, if you keep an eye on the threads on the tour you will see that I've suggested a couple of pubs to meet up in for Holmfirth and Manchester ~ it'd be great to see you in there, hopefully there'll be a few off this site meeting up.
You are correct that Holmfirth is 'in the middle of nowhere' and probably the hardest to get to, it's a good venue though! Huddersfield is the nearest town of any size and there does seem to be a good (and late running) bus service back from Holmfirth. However, not alot happens in Huddersfield (awaits abuse from the locals)so you may want to quickly head to Manchester ready for the Sunday gig. Or, if you want to see some sights go to York or Liverpool on the Saturday; Manchester, Liverpool, York, Huddersfield and Leeds for that matter are on the same train route and there is a very frequent service.
When you know your accomodation arrangements let me know and I'll advise you again.

All the best

Mike

I'm very excited that I am officially coming to the UK to be a groupie to attend the Bexhill- Cardiff shows!

If anyone else is traveling and would like to do some ride sharing or what not, I'm stiff formulating my plans. (And am open to suggestions, as the Holmfirth show seems to be the trickiest place to travel on public transportation.)

I can't wait to meet all you folks, so I hope there are lots of meet ups before the gigs!

The Letchworth show is sold out!

Given the numbers I gather there won't be as many seats as first planned - maybe only 25 or so, with everyone else standing. They'll be on a first-come, first-served, basis too, so if you're going to need a seat get there early.

I think the shop will be open as normal until around 7, then kicking out the non-attendees, so it’d be wise to get there before 7 to collect your ticket, then you’re free to do as you please.

I've been asked about a pre-show meet-up : Letchworth is an old Quaker town, so pub-wise it's pretty poor:-

[1] The Broadway Hotel has an Ok bar though is a bit pricey,
[2] The Three Magnets (Weatherspoons) attracts an "I'll drink whatever is cheap" crowd and consequently can get a bit lairy.
[3] The Hogshead, right opposite the station is a noisy “Vertical Drinking Establishment” for people under 25.

The Tavern, across the car park from the cinema, is probably the best of a bad bunch...

Actually, if you want to eat then L'Artista (virtually opposite David’s) is pretty good. Not sure I'll have time beforehand, but I'm thinking of heading over there afterwards...

I've had another note from Andy in the shop:-

Tickets selling fast. 50 nearly which would be the top limit if it we did it seated. Can go up to 75 if we do some standing which I think we will have to. Anyone who wants to come but hasn't paid yet needs to do so quickly as only those who have paid will be guaranteed a ticket

Wanted something north of Letchworth, but this is slightly too far.... :o)

Ok, I have more news:-

[1] You need to fill in the booking form at the link in my reply above, then ring Andy in the shop on (01462) 475900 to pay your money.

[2] I asked how much they were selling the book for, and he said £18, so with your £4 ticket-price reduction you'll be able to get a copy for £14.

[3] When I mentioned Amazon were selling the book a lot cheaper he said : "When was the last time you saw Amazon organising in-stores and signing events?". He loves Kristin and her music, but they've got to keep the shop running and that's partly why they organise events like this.

I realise we're in financially dire times, and people are watching where every penny goes - I wouldn't dream of telling anyone how to spend their money. But small independent shops don't have the financial clout of the big chains (hundreds of them have closed over recent years), so they need support by other means. I'm biased, of course, because this place is my home from home - I've been shopping / browsing / listening / chatting to friends / whiling away the hours in there since I moved to Letchworth in the early 80s. It's where I bought the first Muses album from! I don't mind spending a bit more to ensure I still have a place to do that, but I can afford to - I appreciate some people can't.
