Count me in that nerd clan.

I kind of like the way that you guys are pulling this site together with all the various RSS feeds. I mean, that just makes sense. Find the tools that you like best and aggregate them on to one site in the easiest way possible.

kristinhersh.com is KristinSpace...and there are no dumb ads! ;-)

I nerdily like the fact that she's my friend on FB too, but I'd never expect her to spend a huge amount of time on there. I think it's impressive that she/Bily spent enough time on there to even set up a profile!
You guys worry too much, I don't think any of us are expecting K to be an active participant in every social networking site going, would rather she spent her time writing & playing music :), I think you already do more community wise than most, & it's great to know we can get in touch with you Billy if need be.

Personally, as an aside, I just can't stand spending much time [on MySpace]. It hurts my senses and my sensibilities.

my sentiments exacto-precisely. i spend a fair amount of time (read: too much time) on facebook; i admit though, and however sheepishly, that this is almost exclusively because they've added some fun games. :P i think the site's an exercise in terrible design and the 1% or so of my facebook "friends" that are actually real-life friends of mine, i never communicate with on there, but rather through email, IMs, or whatever. but MySpace...well, i often wonder that i have a profile on there at all. i don't remember why i established one and every time i go to the site - which on average is probably once every six months - my first impulse is to get the hell out of there. just looking at it constitutes self-abuse.

i mention KH/TM/5FW etc. periodically in my facebook...profile...or on my home page...or...wherever the hell i mention them (i don't know where's where on that site) just in case anyone happens across it and gets curious (and because i'm proud to be a fan :), but i don't even bother on MySpace. i don't do anything there. i actually feel like to mention Kristin et al. on there would almost be to disgrace them. Kristin's work should be seen in a cleaner light.

sorry...no offense meant to anyone who thinks more highly of MySpace than do i. Billy's post speaking my own thoughts so perfectly just sort of triggered a rant i guess. :)

What irks me about, as Billy puts it, MySpaceBook and related ilk is that technically the tools exist, although in various forms of readiness, to build self-hosted and distributed social networks that don't depend upon everyone having accounts on the same damned sites. But (as far as I know, anyway) no one's ever made it super-easy to implement and so it's just never caught on.

i would tend to agree with michele about myspace: it's not easy on the eye and has certainly gotten progressively worse with the ads and such but it's a large population of potential ears which, more often than you would expect, don't spend a lot of time elsewhere on the internet. for example, i help maintain a tori amos news site and we often post news about stuff well before it gets posted on her official myspace page. and yet, amazingly, many of the myspacers claim to have been completely unaware of these news items despite it being well-known throughout the tori fan community that spans a large number of sites ranging from news sites like ours to official and fan forums such as this one and wild vanilla.

so i do think there is value in keeping the myspace blog/bulletins updated with the latest big news.

but beyond that, well, i don't see much value. the community features are clunky and annoying, so use it as a gateway that brings people here.

@theonetruebix: i wasn't thrilled by facebook's first/last name thing either. i just go by "woj sven-woj" there and they've left me alone. then again, maybe that's cos it sorta looks like it might be a real name. who knows?

I have a MySpace account only to preserve the name should I ever need it. (Haven't yet.) I explored Facebook once, but they insist on standard first/last names and the reality is anyone who actually knows me, online and off, knows me this way. (As a joke, I did put up a fan page for myself on Facebook for awhile, then I got tired on the joke and disabled my account.)

But yes, Twitter. Bane and boon of my Internet existence.

i have no experience with facebook, but have been contemplating it for a while.

as far as myspace is concerned, i don't think you need to spend a lot time on it to get some sort of 'something positive' out of it. as much as i agree with all of the bad aspects of myspace, some good does come out of it. i will on occasion spend a little time browsing friends lists and it's amazing where it will lead you to sometimes. that possibility right there is enough to spend a bit of time there.

nothing will replace or even compare to this community, but all of us here are already 'sold'. i think all you would need to do is post blogs and send bulletins when big stuff is happening. send it out and direct folks here. i think there is definitely potential to reach people that aren't already 'here'.

other than that, just log in a couple times a week so people know you're still there!

@saracryst: I totally get the 'music discovery' aspect of MySpace, and give it it's due, especially in light of the fact that it brought you back to KH. It's why we maintain a profile there, and change the tracks from time to time.

I've always seen Myspace as two separate entities. There's the social-networking part, which is populated mainly by high school children and pretty bad. Then there's the music part, which is how I make decisions as to what to buy. You can discover SO many new bands by browsing friend lists. It's another world.

And it's how I rediscovered Kristin - through the LTSLAS samples on her Myspace.

Thanks for the vid, interesting stuff & this new place proves the importance of this community (& other grass roots groups) & how this medium can work in a positive way. I for one never imagined all those years ago that we could end up having such a relationship with an artist we love & respect so much. With everything that's been going on with & between K & her fans, I marvel at the mutual effect we've all been having on each other of late...

ps I am completely addicted to K's Twitters. It's my first computer-port-of-call each day, & is guaranteed to either move me or make me smile (or both)!!

Some of you have asked why Kristin doesn't do more with her Facebook and MySpace profiles, specifically why she doesn't spend more time with them. I thought this forum might be a good place to discuss that.

The simple truth is that while MySpace might be useful to the newest newbie to Kristin's music (and therefore somewhat useful to us), it's also kind of insulting and inane for the rest of us - and by "us" in this case, I mean those of us in this community - you, Kristin and me. I dislike all the "noise", I dislike the meaningless friending and I dislike the corporation. MySpace will never be where we spend much time or energy. We care way more about a place like this, where we can have meaningful interactions - and amplify them, sharing our individual communications (and connections), which we love and value, with the larger community.

Same for Facebook. Although Facebook's less offensive, we haven't spent much time over there either. To be honest, it's just not that important and seems kind of silly, really.

Bottom line: This is the place that matters to us and we want to make sure it matters to you, too. We've done some amazing things together - with each of us on the receiving end of some pretty special gifts.

None of us has unlimited time or resources -- we want to make sure we make the most of ours. You all are a pretty damn good investment in our estimation.

Lots of love.

B + K

p.s. - This video inspired this post. If you don't know Seth Godin, you should. He's a hero of ours and a mighty warrior in the battle between the meaningless and the meaningful. And Tom Peters is no slouch himself.

p.p.s. - But we love Twitter.
