@firepile : we're a very broad church, I reckon! Came across "Rent Girl" in a New York comic shop on my first US visit, and was mesmerised by her illustrations (and Michelle Tea's words of course), so I keep an eye out for what she's up to. Did you contribute?

I would love to get one of these. Just hoping there's enough time between the official announcement and when it actually goes on sale to save up for one, cause this sounds like a HUGE labor of love/work of art.

It's really amazing to me just how much Kristin takes her fans into account during all these projects, and it says a lot about the quality of her artistry (and her audience!) that the music doesn't suffer from that. Not that most of us would try to suggest/dictate how she performs or creates, but I really don't think most musicians/artists/writers/whatever would be able to create under the same microscopic level that K seems to operate under. It's a lot of pressure and she always handles it beautifully.

yes! Kickstarter is excellent! The Age of Rockets exceeded their target of $8000 which was great. They're a relativly unknown band compared to the Muses so I wonder how much could be raised for a new Muses project?

This might not be useful, but I thought I'd throw it out there. The amazing band Shearwater is doing a special release of a limited dossier related to their upcoming album. In order to help fund the project, they are using http://www.kickstarter.com

A $30 pledge is the minimum needed for the dossier, but those who wish to contribute more are given some extra goodies. Here's more info.

I wonder if something similar could be arranged for Kristin's box. Just a thought.

Strange Angels are presumably getting a "free" copy of the CD anyway. I appreciate that y'all put in a fair bit of cash to Kristin Inc., but it'll discourage the slightly less obsessive fan if nice things are only available to people who can commit to a certain level of investment on a long-term basis. It's just not viable for some people, no matter how much they may want to.

My suggestion would be that once a price is decided, set a cut-off date for orders and take a deposit ($10, maybe). If there are more orders than boxes, do a random draw to see who gets them, and send the remaining $10 people a copy of the CD with maybe a short note from Kristin saying "ner ner nee ner ner." (The note could be nice, if you really want.) If there are more boxes than orders, send the remainder as freebies to nice people on here who can't afford to be Strange Angels. Like me, for example. And/or save one or two to be auctioned on eBay for some nice charity or other, like the kids' college fund...

I guess the key is figuring out how many you're going to produce and how close that's going to be to the number you can sell at an appropriate price. It would suck a very great deal if anyone lost money on something as cool as this. Maybe a private auction could be conducted here? Set a reserve price and then just see how people bid.

@Mikel: I remember that essay... I'm pretty sure it was from the In A Doghouse compilation, right?

Hey BillyO,
I just want to be a nerd about song stuff at you for a minute... I'm sure this would all just be speculation, but what do you and Kris think might become of the '08 and '09 CASH tracks that are being left out of this release? Might some of them turn into TM (or perhaps even Fippy!) songs? Or, can we expect them to be included in K's next solo release? I hate to think of a stunner like "Morning Birds" being left by the wayside... Also! There were two songs from the Live In Somerville set, "Blessed" and "Somewhere In America" that, to my knowledge, have not turned up anywhere else since then. At the time, they sounded (to me) like they could have been thrown in with the 2003 Muses songs. Have those been thrown away, or is there still a chance they might turn up on an official release? Wow, sorry to be such a nerd. Like I said, I'm sure all of this is probably speculation, and that K might not even have any concrete idea for what will become of said songs.

And really, if there are going to be "give aways", they should probably go to fans that can't actually afford the box.

I had a dream about this box last night. It was wrapped in shiny metallic paper on a table and I knew what it was but I wasn't allowed to open it yet (telling, that). Then I recalled Kristin writing something similar about leaving a big present on the table and tiptoeing out of the room...

Bottom line is clearly I want this. And I agree with Robin (aka firepile) re: paying for the art. I know I am lucky to even consider that I can, but still...

I am so excited to see the finished product (and secretly love that the vinyl will be different from the CD... if only there was enough money to do a fun double 10" or something...)

Hi Billy,
I hate to see 2 or more songs being left of the vinyl edition... But I understand why. I love to have a vinyl version with better sound quality. Isn't it possible to make it a double 12"? Or even better, a double 10", that would be awesome.
And if that isn't possible, the songs could also be put on a bonus 7" maybe?

I'm *still* giddy with excitement for this even after all the time that has passed since it was announced.

The suggestion of giving away 10% of them is so generous (as usual) but these are not going to be cheap to produce, and the idea of K & B losing money on these instead of making money makes me feel icky. I know I'm extremely lucky to be able to say this at all, but I *want* to pay for one. This is the sort of art that I want to own (so badly) but it's also the sort of art that I want to buy. Those 2 things don't always overlap, but in this case they really do. I don't just want it (to drool on, and pet, and caress, and shine a spotlight on), but I want to support the artists that dream up this sort of thing and follow through with making it. So whatever system gets dreamed up for selling and distributing these, I really hope it doesn't involve so much generosity that money is lost instead of gained for the artists!

@pegasus: Yes the songs will remain on the CD, which is clocking in at something like 58 minutes. Tracklisting is forthcoming...

The point of us doing a vinyl edition would be to create an audiophile version of the material. For that reason, we're limiting our timings to 19 minutes a side. After that the dropoff in quality is precipitous and therefore, defeats the purpose.

So I think we're looking at more than 2 songs being dropped...but the big idea will be to make a vinyl edition that is limited, audiophile quality and comprised of it's own sequence, distinct from the CD version.

Y'know?

Hey, just wanted to add that I didn't mean to offend anyone with the suggestion that SAs get first crack. That idea popped into my head and went straight to my keyboard. I *do* stand by my suggestion of some sort of lottery, though.

Perhaps the lottery for the 1-in-10 free one could be a separate thing. Do an actual raffle, where people buy a $5 (or whatever) ticket.

Also, I think this project needs to be archived. Video of the box creation would be best, but just some photographs of each box. I suppose the fans could post photographs of their own boxes, but, as someone who probably won't be buying one of these due to finances, it would be wonderful to have access to a gallery that displays all of them. This *is* art, after all.

And, um, what Darrell said about the awesomeness of all of this!

I sort of think it's not fair if SA's get first dibs, but I sort of think it is. I mean, we already get so much special treatment that it just plain doesn't seem right for us to get first dibs on something so amazing, especially when, as already pointed out, there are other fans who love K just as much but can't afford to pay the regular subscription but may be able to afford this... although we did pretty much pay for the recording costs... But I agree that the SA's shouldn't be seen as some elitist clique, if we aren't already. And I have an inkling that SA's might get some sort of special SA package of the CD release anyway (not as special as this, but you know what I mean), 'cause B & K are always doing cool stuff like that. And aren't SA's supposed to get the album before it's actually released or something like that?

I think the census idea is a very good one, and the contest idea as well. I feel like giving away 10% of them is kind of a cool idea, but there should be some sort of stipulation for who they're given to, like contest winners or something. Or maybe you could give them away to fans who have done really special things for the TMO community - like Alistair, who totally pulled his shit together to make t-shirts for the ATP fest, or Timo - if it wasn't for him, there would be pretty much zero Kristin guitar tabs available, or Scott, who runs the Ning. Maybe that's a totally lame idea. Man, I'm glad I don't have to make these tough decisions.

Personally, being a strange angel myself, i think we ought to get 1st chance to buy, but i'm happy to join the scrum however they're released!

If you wanted to try to incorporate Billy's 10% give-away idea with the SAs who feel like they should be getting some sort of special consideration, you could give away a certain percentage to the general public and then another certain percentage to randomly selected SAs-only.

Or, you could also randomly select people from Ks various online communities - one winner from each community - FB, Twitter, KH forum, SAs, etc. You'd get some overlap using that method though. For example, I'm a member/follower of each of the four communities mentioned, so I'd have four chances of winning-yay! Might be seen as cheating to some but then again, maybe folks who aren't members of those communities would *become* members just to win a shot at the box? Sounds like a good way to get K more followers to me!

Alternatively, rather than giving them away at all, you could make us work for it. Have a contest. An essay contest, photo contest, video contest, art contest, decoupage contest, etc. Various categories of contests and the winner from each category wins a box. Create art to win art!

As a strange angel, I don't feel like I should be given any special consideration for purchasing these. I'm an SA cuz I love K and can afford to chip in every few months, but there are loads of people who love K just as much but can't afford to chip in right now and I don't feel that they should be excluded.
