  1. I enjoyed the show yesterday in Gateshead. It's not the sort of music I normally listen to but sometimes it's good to hear new stuff. The friends I went with are very much committed to that brand of Americana and/or play similar stuff and keep trying to encourage me to listen to The Handsome Family, and now I actually have! The voices blended well, and the rich baritone of Brett Sparks had huge charisma, I thought. I feel my horizons have been suitably broadened!

  2. I have to agree, someone I met up with last night said something like, "If I had known what it was going to be like, I probably wouldn't have come ...and as a consequence I would have missed a unique musical event"

    Thoroughly enjoyed it.

  3. And on the flipside one of the friends I went with now has an interest in hearing more Kristin Hersh. As Eliza Carthy said "Buy our stuff!" :)

  4. I didn't realise there was stuff on at Gateshead today (and not stuff that needed tickets I didn't have) during the day and got back in time for my evening commitments. I could have got there for that if I'd realised. A bit late now... Oh well! A bit bummed by my lack of preparation...

  5. Don't think anyone has described the format of the gig, so will have a go.

There were 8 musicians on stage, all evening - the Handsome family, Tim Eriksen, Eliza Carthy, the double bass, the music director on several instruments, Howe Gelb & KH. Basically each half of the show, the named artists did a couple of songs, and passed the baton to someone else.

As a KH show it was absolutely bobbins, just 4 songs, but for a music fan it was stunning! There had been limited practice (Howe & K arrived about half four that afternoon), but everyone played on everything, and it was quite brilliant. :o)
