  1. @halfbornhalfmade Totally agree LG is not "trying" to be anything but is still discovering what kind of artist she is. As if Radiohead, Madonna, (or even K) didn't do through that lol. On the Madonna comparison, I thought LG was ripping her off BEFORE I was really familiar with her stuff. Love MAdonna, but LG is so much more interesting to me right now. Anyone see Madonna's Celebration video? Look at the styling. Or for that matter, look at Christina Aguilera's new album, Beyonce's recent videos, J-Low's ill fated comeback. All owe huge debts to LG. Bringing a bit of contemporary art to pop culture is no small feat (the piano she played with Elton John was a Terence Koh sculpture) and not something Madonna was going to do anytime soon.

  2. Ahem, i believe wild vanilla might be the more appropriate forum for this type of discussion. But since it’s gone on here so long now i’ll chip in with my two cents worth anyway.

Although i compulsively avoid most things commercial i have noticed that ‘Telephone’ song. The version that first caught my attention (mental trespass!) was the tail end of an instrumental by a classical sextet called Aston. Initially i thought it was some Flogging Molly cover and wondered why it got airplay but tracked it down via you tube and learnt a bit more about the song. Firstly, those young people in Aston (all Sydney conservatorium students) sure look like they had a lot of fun playing it. Then i noticed that for a song released less than a year ago there’s been *a lot* of different covers posted. Regardless of personal preference, values, likes, dislikes etc. it's clearly a catchy song in tune with some zeitgeist. The number of people taking the time to learn how to play a song seems to me a fairly objective and non-monetary indicator of songcraft.

My favourite version of ‘Telephone’ is a stripped back one by a young New Jersey duo called HelenaMaria; two acoustic guitars, two voices and a kickdrum. Following up i noticed that a live performance of their self penned song ‘overdrive’ is a wee touch like some early TM. So in a somewhat removed and round about manner this perhaps demonstrates a link of sorts between K and Gaga, as suggested by the OP. Maybe Gaga will indeed evolve (she can afford the lab time now) but short attention span pop art soft porn is probably one of the few genres K hasn’t explored ... not yet anyway.

  3. Am I the only one who is disappointed in Madonna? I believe that back around the time of "Like A Prayer" she really cared about music and art. Then instead of taking it to the next level she got too wrapped up in "changing people's attitudes about sexuality" and now her biggest concern is working with whoever is the coolest producer or dj. I wish she would try to do an album that was timeless instead of timely.

And while- as far as I've heard- Lady Gaga hasn't made a truely stunning song yet I believe someday she will.

I also wanna mention that there are still songs on the radio that aren't junk; two quick examples:

Pink "Family Portrait" Whenever I hear this song I get all choked up. It's not because I relate to it at all- my parents are happy and still together and don't fight. But Pink's voice is so strong I can't help but feel it all.

Leona Lewis "Better In Time" This song I can relate to a little but that's not why it gets to me. Lewis sounds so sweet and in love and hurt, it just tears me up.

Radio is bad but if you ignore it altogether you miss out on some good things, worthwhile things.

  4. @Xander - you are not alone. Like a Prayer was a fantastic album, still right up there in my all time faves. Since then, you're right. The potential that woman had to really push the boundaries and become one of the greatest musicians of our era, yet she blew it. Another perfect example of image and tabloid appeal reigning supreme over quality and innovation.

In fairness, Ray of Light was a return to form IMO, but it was all too brief.

BBC 6Music is an awesome station, discovered all sorts of people on there - The Jim Jones Revue and Frank Turner spring to mind. I have to say, 6Music aside, music radio is completely past its sell-by date. While I agree that you occasionally come across an unexpected gem, the agony you have to go through to actually get to that gem is really not worth the effort. Commercial radio sucks big time (even if the music they play is passable). Radio just hasn't bothered to keep up with the ever-changing way music is distributed and aired. Sadly, neither have the majority of people that listen to it. They get the same old same old and, quite frankly, they deserve it.

  5. You're right, she has had some good songs since, I'd say:
    "Beautiful Stranger"
    "Ray of Light"
"Don't Tell Me" (saw her playing the guitar w/ another guitarist on Letterman- her voice sounded so nice)
Her best song from the last ten years would have to be "Nothing Fails"- it could almost be an Aimee Mann song (she even says "when I get lost in space/ I can return to this place").

  6. Oops, posted twice. Trying to think of another song...the last Madonna album I got was Bedtime Stories (1995) I like that record and it has an awesome track called "I'd Rather be Your Lover", I think it's her sexiest song ever.

  7. I really dont wanna offend anyone but am I the only person getting freaked out with all this talk of Lady Gaga and Madonna???

  8. Tom - Amen

    Peace
    Tom

  9. Ditto

  10. I have never heard a Lady Gaga song.

    What do I win?

  11. This conversation would go better in a different forum. I know at one point B and K were not pleased with all the mud flinging. And the focus here should be Kristin and her amazing new book and CD.

  12. I agree. Different forum or just let this thread die already!!

  13. Mudslinging? If you're talking about me and another forum member- I could be wrong, but I think we're buddies now.

And I've never been to a forum where the owners' policy was "Talk about me- and only me- or leave".

My understanding of this particular forum is that we're all like-minded people, gathered together by our appreciation of KH, TM, and 50FW, and since we're gathered in this forum we talk about subjects that might not come up elsewhere.

I think this thread has run its course anyway, at least for now. But I hope people won't be scared away from commenting just because a certain member is trying to play the "Stop, K & B might not approve!!" card.

  14. @xander: here, here! I do believe this post started out being a comparison between K and Lady Gaga (perfectly acceptable), followed up by a reasonable Lady Gaga love vs. hate debate, and now has morphed into "Don't talk about anything but Kristin here!" So, who're the ones who're sidetracked?

And now I'll go check out Madonna's Like A Prayer album because I've never heard it.

Also, xander, as far as Lady Gaga not having written a truly stunning song yet, do check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7HvURBhMGE

  15. @xander - of course we're buddies. We were never not buddies. Even friends disagree sometimes. Completely agree with you (again!!!) and halfbornhalfmade. 'Mud-flinging' is a bit of a silly term to use to describe our discussion.

To be honest, I've been captivated by this thread. My opinion of LG hasn't changed, but I'm beginning to appreciate the broadness of her appeal as well as the open-mindedness of fellow contributors in their opinions and music preferences. I'm certain K&B are open-minded enough to accept the diversity of opinions and taste on this forum.

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed they haven't contributed to the discussion themselves. (Perhaps K would like to do a cover of Poker Face...)

  16. I agree with the above three posts. Never the intention to mud sling, just open minded opinions.

It has been a fun thread but has probably been bled dry now. Although if K were to do a cover, she would certainly make it her own.

My favourite Britney cover was a bbc session version of Baby One More Time by Travis.

  17. Half & half, that was really good, I liked it. Also, it was shot really well, I liked the lighting (and watching it made me think of Fiona Apple so I had to search for her "Extraordinary Machine" song on Youtube right after).

Also, if you do check out "Like A Prayer" can I suggest looking for a song called "Supernatural"- it's a great non-album track, the B-side to "Cherish". It's a lot of fun and perfect for Halloween-time (there's a "Red Hot + Dance" remix of it out there but the original version is the best, it starts out w/ some Jimi Hendrix-style guitar).

  18. Just so that people understand what scottturlock was talking about - the old Throwingmusic board used to be quite busy and usually very good natured, but there were a few threads that became more heated (round about the time of the last US election if I remember right) and they gave up on the idea of having a board for a while.

Wild Vanilla over on ning stepped in and kept the flame alive so to speak (http://wildvanilla.ning.com/) then K & B set up a new board here and the idea was that Wild Vanilla would be the place for 'off-topic' discussions and this place would be more for K-related threads.

Any 'mudslinging' being referred to was about two years ago - no-one here is being accused of anything!
