  1. How cool is this? If it's old news, forgive me, but I've never encountered it before: Google has scanned and uploaded, in very nice resolution, a bunch of back issues of magazines (including the complete run of "Spin"), as well as books. The database is searchable, meaning you do things like this:

    http://books.google.com/books?lr=&rview=1&q=throwing+muses&btnG=Search+Books

    and this:

    http://books.google.com/books?lr=&rview=1&q=kristin+hersh&btnG=Search+Books

    or even this:

    http://books.google.com/books?lr=&rview=1&q=50+foot+wave&btnG=Search+Books

I'm a bit frightened that I've discovered this. As a kid, I spent entire summers reading through old magazines, and I'm still a nerd when I come across back issues. Their ability to act as snapshots of history, ads and all, just suck me in. So if I'm unresponsive going forward, you know what I'm likely doing...

  2. Scott, I am going to waste hours on this. I don't know whether I should say "thanks" or not

  3. thanks a lot for this, very cool indeed!

  4. Great link, very addictive!! Wee problem tho, if one tries to search for anything on The Breeders...

    http://books.google.com/books?lr=&rview=1&q=the+breeders&btnG=Search+Books

...& so on!!! Although, I must admit that a sample reading of 'The Cocker', by a certain W.Sketchley, is VERY informative...

  5. I so wish the internet had been like this when I was a student back in '97 :(

I wrote my dissertation on Women in the Music Scene, research material was so hard to come by!

    Thanks for posting!

  6. The SPIN issue with Elvis Costello- after the TM article, if you scroll further there's a full-page ad for Hunkpapa with the sleeve band photo and the slogan "Who's Musing Who?"

Was Sire trying to promote TM with a reference to Aretha Franklin's album "Who's Zooming Who?" ?

  7. I think, if I remember correctly, and no, it wasn't my slogan...that it was a play on, "Who's using who?"
