  1. Was really surprised (twice over) to see this on Amazon UK:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rat-Girl-Memoir-Kristin-Hersh/dp/0143117394/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271918715&sr=8-5

First there's the title - I thought it was staying Paradoxical, then there's the date, 31st August!! Probably both wrong...?

  2. Hi Alistair,
I think this IS the American copy. It is down to be released on that date in the States at $15.(It's on the American Amazon site). The British recommended retail price of £9.73 is about $15 in sterling ( as you know, British Penguins are never priced at such an "exact" figure!).

    Regards, P.

  3. Yes, yes...Pegasus is right - it IS the American copy.

  4. Chiming in with my two cents here -- Amazon's categorization system isn't perfect, not by a long shot, and it gets titles, etc. wrong a lot more often than you'd think.

  5. Bit alarming to find (although not altogether that unsurprising, I suppose) that if you scroll down the page on Amazon for 'Rat Girl', as quoted above by Alistair, there is a sponsored link for "Nude Rats For Research"...zoiks, makes me wonder what the surprise sponsored link will be for 'Paradoxical Undressing'...probably some Trinny & Susannah 'What Not To Wear' sh*te. At present, if you type in 'Paradoxical Undressing' in the book category, it brings up titles relating to forensic pathology...

  6. Now, with cover picture.....

  7. For my fellow North Americans: http://www.amazon.com/Rat-Girl-Memoir-Kristin-Hersh/dp/0143117394/

  8. absolutely LOVE this cover!!!!

  9. It's also available for pre-order at Amazon UK...

  10. that cover looks great! i love the artwork on Limbo, so it was good to see Hernandez' work again.

On another note; how come there are different versions in the US and UK/Europe? I know this happens all the time in the publishing world, but why exactly? And two different titles?

  11. This is a bit lazy of me but this thread has most of your answers, and the forum's opinions. :)

  12. Hey Billy,
Will you have any copies of Paradoxical / Rat Girl for sale at the uk / Eire shows?
I'd rather get it from you guys than via Amazon.....

  13. Hi superfurry...No, we won't have copies in time to bring them...pub date's not until Aug 31

We'll probably have Crooked books and CDs though. Our online store will have Rat Girl too...eventually!

  14. Please excuse me if I have missed a thread somewhere. Is the book called "Rat Girl" world wide now, or will the UK release be "Paradoxical Undressing"? Thanks!

  15. I don't think you've missed anything...it's still called Paradoxical Undressing in UK + the rest of the world.

  16. Thanks Billy!

Both Amazon UK and The Book Depository have Rat Girl advertised, could be that they won't have the other cover until nearer release date?

  17. Exactly, I think that's it.

  18. Hi BillyO just wondering how much the books will be at the shows? I'm heading to the show in Whelans (can't wait) and wondering if I should get it off you guys there or from the Book Depository.

  19. £10 at the UK shows, so...15 Euros I guess...That seem right? Just to clarify, we'll be selling Crooked...not Rat Girl.

  20. Daft question?

Won't the fact that we can buy 'Rat Girl' from Amazon.co.uk from 31st Aug onwards
affect future UK sales of 'Paradoxical Undressing'?

I actually prefer the UK title but I can't wait any longer...been wanting to read
    something by K for ever.

  21. I notice the RG/PU teaser is downloadable as a simple *.pdf. Does that mean it is freely disseminatable?

  22. @Greta Garbage - it's possible that imports of RG will affect sales in the UK, but only to a point...when I raised the issue with Atlantic, they were not terribly concerned. I'll trust them on this one.

    @atomicTheory - Sure!

  23. I'm confused! I wanted to pre-order "Rat Girl" today (on K's birthday!) It was up on amazon.co.uk for a while for pre-order, but now they say it's "not available." It's not there under "Paradoxical Undressing" either! What's going on?!

  24. It may be that the window has closed for purchases in the UK...sorry rheis!

  25. You may still be able to pre-order Rat Girl from The Book Depository

  26. Ok, I just pre-ordered Rat Girl from The Book Depository. Phew! Glad I got that sorted! Thanks, guys!!

  27. Thanks for clarifying things Billy - I pre-ordered a while ago...not entirely sure what's going on with Amazon UK now...wonder if I'll still get the book...time will tell!
    I can't frickin wait!

PS: I'm really thrilled that Billy replied (ffs I'm 38! get a grip woman!) so good to have such direct contact :-) I met Tanya, Lesley and David 20 years ago in Dundee and I was SO happy, really decent grounded people - unfortunately K was pretty exhausted post gig but she drew me a lovely wee picture...I LOVE it when "famous" people turn out to be as regular as your neighbours!

  28. @Greta Garbage - If you pre-ordered, you'll receive your copy. There's some provision that allows the US version to be sold in (and shipped to) the UK...but only up until the UK version is ready for pre-order...so that time must be here, or rapidly approaching.

A couple of key differences between the US (Penguin) and UK (Atlantic) versions:

    The title:
US - Rat Girl (published by Penguin)
UK - Paradoxical Undressing (published by Atlantic)

    The format:
US - Trade paperback (kind of a nice quality, larger than usual paperback with a pretty cover front and back)
UK - Hardcover, with a dust jacket

    Cover design:
US - Illustration by Gilbert "Beto" Hernandez of Love and Rockets fame (illustrator of TM's Limbo cover, too)
UK - Cover design by Vaughan Oliver of V23/4AD with original artwork by Shinro Ohtake (TM's House Tornado, Uses, The Curse, KH's Hips and Makers and The Grotto - The cover most closely resembles the Hips and Makers cover, IMHO

But the content of the manuscript is the same in both versions...

  29. ...and now I geek out re: Shinro Ohtake artwork and plan to buy both...because I am like that.

  30. Billy, thanks for the clarification.
Mikel, you're not the only one :-)
