Wait, now it's called "Uses"? You're just being funny, right? I thought the official name of that record was "Sensuous Flaps". Who should I believe?
(Ditto about buying both. Hard to resist...)

I believe the official title is Throwing Muses, and their first album was officially untitled.
Anyone seen this on Amazon UK - Marketplace sellers totally taking the p*ss: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/0143117394/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
This is the type of vile profiteering normally only expected of ticket touts and other similar vermin.
Clearly they think there are enough gullible people out there to make this kind of speculative offer viable. They only need the one.
Not sure if there is anything legal to stop it. Maybe Amazon.co.uk are not aware of this and we should mount a campaign to enlighten them. I would not want my reputation damaged by such blatant exploitation.
I am emailing Amaaazon as we speak :)
and here is the email I sent them.
"Hi,
I am concerned that several amazon marketplace sellers are offering the Kristin Hersh autobiography, Ratgirl, for extortionate prices, on the premise that it is unavailable to purchase in the UK due to copyright conditions. The UK version is not available until 2011.
I would hope that an organisation with a reputation such as yours would not condone such gross profiteering.
Obviously policing your site for every abuse must be an enormous task so I hope this report of suspected malpractice is received with the genuine good faith it is sent.
Thanks"
I await a response with interest.
Tony,
I think you'll find Amazon traders or book dealers on ABE can ask what they want for a book.
As a rare book collector, I've had many years experience of "filtering out" the silly prices asked by some book dealers. You just ignore them, basically.
Still, The Book Depository's £4.97 + postage on Amazon traders looks more like it, don't you think?
I just got an email from the Book Depository. Rat Girl is on the way! Yaaaaaaayyyy!!!
Hi Pegasus
I used to sell a lot of collectible vinyl in the past & the same is true of record dealers. For some it is all about milking the market, and maintaining the collectors prices at all costs.
Making a fair return is not good business practice. Probably why I could never make more than a meagre living from it.
Amaaaaaaaaaazon(they will always be amaaaaaazon to me) have responded with a promise to investigate and enforce policy if needed. I will wait with a breath full of bate!?!
That Book Depository price is amaaaaaazing value, so I may not wait for Paradoxical. Probably end up with both versions anyway so why fool myself :)
I checked Amazon.co.uk Marketplace this morning and all the extortionate prices have been dropped
and all sales are at very reasonable prices now - really glad I spotted that and we responded.
Consumer champions that we are! not long now 'til it arrives!
Yay...You guys are heroes!
My copy arrived!
What is weird is reading it and hearing Kristin's voice in my head for the passages that I have heard her read and then not for the other parts.
Got mine today too!! Adrian, I was *just* reading the first few pages & thinking the *exact* same thing!!
@adrian and dollface: That happens to K and me, too.
Adrian, Dollface - who did you order with?
I have had it on order with Amazon for about 3 months, but it's showing as out of stock, and wioth a delivery estimate 7-9 Sept.
bookdepository.com
No surprise: it's wonderful.
@Billy when that first happened I thought "yes I want the audio book", but then I realised that the paradoxical undressing shows were in no way a simple reading and working the right tone ect. Out for the book would take forever and not in a good way. So I'm no longer wishing for that.
Thank you for the wonderful book Kristin.
My copy arrived today from Amazon!
Think the UK is out of stock (which would be good news). Except I now have orders with both Amazon & the Book Depository that are in some 'procsssing' limbo. :(
Alistair, when did you place your order? I placed mine only last Friday (the 27th), and since yesterday it's been listed as "Dispatched". Can't imagine why yours would have to take longer to process (and I would guess that you placed your order earlier than I did). My copy of "Crooked" is still "processing" though.
Amazon was 19th May, Book depository was only on the 30th Aug.
Rat Girl arrived in Scotland today! I've done almost nothing but read and drink tea today
and as I just Tweeted to K there's a real sense of deja vu for me, I recognise parts of myself in this book...in between the smiles it has seriously stopped me in my tracks for gasps and groans of "Oh f*ck" and "Oh sh*t" and shrieks of laughter.
I'm loving it and when I've digested it all I'll try and come up with a review for amazon.co.uk
I'm exhausted reading it, well done K I'm so happy you did this.
Wait, is this the same Greta Garbage that wrote That's Disgusting? ( http://www.amazon.com/Thats-Disgusting-Adult-Guide-Tasteless/dp/1580080944/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1283748074&sr=1-3 )
@bferrin oh my God noooo that's a totally different Greta (never heard of whoever they are and I'm slightly embarrassed that I'm not as clever as I imagined!)
Wonder if I can change my forum name?
Billy or other admins would this involved deleting my present account and starting over?
Picked my copy up in the Waterstones Store on Dawson St. in Dublin today, can't wait to read it!
Well, I know for the fact the other one is a pseudonym, and is a widely known author, who many would be shocked to learn she has written such a book. I for one don't think you need to change your forum name on her account, I just looked at the name yesterday, and it finally clicked in my brain that I had heard that name before, and was just wondering if she was using it to stay anonymous on other forums as well. (Her book, both of the one's I know of under that name are worth checking out though.)
So I just ordered mine from thebookdepository. There was no way I could wait until it arrived somewhere locally in Australia. On the upside, it means I also ordered another unrelated book I've been wanting for ages - The War of Art. Yay!
I got my copy from Amazon last Friday. I've dipped into it a bit, but it will be a while before I can read it, as it's an addition to an already-huge pile of books I want to get through.
Got it yesterday, just in time too, as I was just finishing Iain Banks' "Transition". Tearing through "Rat Girl" now... Loving it, but need I say that? So real. It's pretty clear that as a writer, too, Kristin has a voice of her own. Well done, ma'am. And, as we internerds are fond of saying, thanks for sharing.
Finished it. Well done, as expected. Lovely, charming writing style (and bad grammar is okay when I know the writer knows it is :) ). Knowing the story in a more in depth manner didn't change any of the songs for me, for which I'm relieved. Weirdly, reading it has made me think of other people's music, for instance "Take it down the freeway like a bullet to the ocean..." Blondie "11:59". Trippy, but you might want to reconsider the profitability of that :)
No offence to Bernie, but reading this really makes me want to see Leslie playing again.... And Tanya, obviously!
