  1. My husband just messaged me (from the other room- we ARE nerds here) all excited to tell me that the Rock Band Network finally launched. It's the feature that lets independent artists create their own tracks for the game and sell them via the store. He was excited for that part, but he was more excited that Kristin already has 2 songs set for launch!

    Mississippi Kite and Fortune!

Since I haven't seen this mentioned, I thought other nerds might be as excited as we are (I haven't played games in ages. This sounds like just the reason to start again).

    (First seen on Kotaku)

  2. I was afraid I was the only nerd - I was so excited to download the 2 Kristin songs, I hope that means more to come

  3. We can all thank the beautiful Ethical Paul Bruneau for this...He worked mighty hard to make it happen.

  4. That's the coolest thing I've heard in awhile. Authoring songs for Rock Band is a hell of a lot of work. Here's an article about it I found by an artist who authored one of his own songs for this initial batch:

    http://www.musicthinktank.com/blog/rock-band-network-authoring-best-left-to-the-pros.html

I haven't played Rock Band in years mainly because they don't tend to release music from artists I like, but this could get me to pick it up again. So when is Paul gonna start on Power + Light??? :)

  5. Yay for EthicalPaul! Thanks for your work on this!

  6. Kristin just tweeted about this, too. This is so freaking cool...

  7. aww thanks everyone! It has seriously been the most intense and rewarding geek-out project I have ever worked on.

That article is very accurate, it's just like he says (well except I have proven you don't HAVE to be a pro)!

I do want to do more of them, but power+light is out at least as a single entity--there is a 10 minute limit per song. Other issues can also come up, such as power+light kicking my ass if I tried to deconstruct it :)

  8. i may take a crack at power and light.....

  9. You go, mudrock!

  10. Ok, we broke out the Rock Band tonight (we hadn't actually played since we did a full-band Endless Setlist back when we lived in Portland- almost 2 years ago!)

I drummed the hell out of Fortune and Mississippi Kite, and now that I've played them, they rock even more than I could've predicted! So kudos, Paul!

I think the new Muses tracks would be PERFECT for this medium.

  11. Very cool, firepile!! Try the Miss Kite bass part! It is repetitive but it really grooves!

  12. Um, have I got this right - it's Xbox only?

Edit: Just seen Paul's post on wildvanilla:
""Select songs" will be made available for the PS3 (and maybe the wii, not sure) after a 30 day exclusivity period for the xbox. Unfortunately, they haven't given any clues which songs will be sent over, so cross your fingers"

    So, fingers crossed....

  13. Fingers crossed indeed. Might even give me an incentive to get Rock Band 2 on the Wii, as the downloadable stuff is generally only available for RB on that format.

Let's just hope for a Wii release - after all, the note tracking and all stuff like that is done (and it's difficult to do because of all the difficulty levels you've got to do for each instrument!) so kudos to ethicalpaul for that.

Now back to all "Monkey Gone To Heaven" on Guitar Hero 5 - I want to nail it on hard!!

  14. Someone please keep us up to date as to which systems this is available for. I only have Guitar Hero: World Tour for the Wii, I've yet to buy a Rock Band but this will likely make me buy it, depending what system is best. This is the kind of thing Rock Band should have had from the beginning, nice to see it finally happening.

How about some classic muses tracks next? Bright Yellow Gun anyone?

  15. I will yell it loudly when/if the songs arrive on other platforms--I'm a PS3 guy myself.

TurboC: if you are getting any Rock Band game for the Wii, Rock Band 2 allows you to get downloadable tracks and that should in turn allow you to get the Kristin tracks as and when they're released. Also, RB2 on Wii will also let you use your Guitar Hero guitar as well so you'll be able to use that instrument and not have to fork out for more gear.

  17. Good to know. Hopefully the K tracks will come out for Wii.

About the "Bright Yellow Gun" thing, I realized that you probably can't do that, as K's old label must own all those old Muses songs. But, if you or someone else involved with K still did want to do some older songs, maybe you could contact some bastard representative from the music corporation and say "hey, we'll give you a free cut if you let us make use of the song that we ourselves wrote?" Maybe they will go for that. :)

  18. Many of the songs on Rock Band are live performance by the original artists. Would a live version of "Bright Yellow Gun" be a way of working around issues with a corporate record label?

Counting down already - the 30 days X-Box exclusivity is almost over & I'm hoping that before Easter is over that I'll be able to rock out to Kristin on the Wii :-)

  19. A re-record can be used to avoid the problem where an artist doesn't own his/her recordings, but it may not avoid the issue of publishing rights. Both types of rights must be clear to put a song into RBN. It's not a question I can answer.

I'm counting down too, but remember that HMX has not given anyone a single clue on exactly which songs will be ported over to the other platforms or when.

  20. PS3 update:

OK, Harmonix has started putting songs from the Rock Band Network onto the PS3. Unfortunately, they are only able to release 5 songs per week (they will be like regular rock band downloadable content songs).

So they are mostly picking the most popular songs from the xbox downloads which makes a lot of financial sense, but not too much sense to us over here I'm afraid. Keep in mind there are like 240 songs currently in the Rock Band Network. Our favorite two are not exactly chart-toppers :)

Over on the Rock Band forums there are many threads containing tons of posts from Rock Band fanatics requesting their favorites--it's a pretty depressing mix of metal and songs that appeared on earlier games like Guitar Hero.

But buried deep in one of the threads was this post where one of our own fellow KH fans is getting her desires heard, through her husband, who cutely requested both KH songs for her. Here it is, but if you don't want to be a little depressed don't read more posts than just this one :)

As for you Wii owners, you are really out in the cold rain so far, they still haven't figured out how they are going to get any of the RBN songs out to you.

  21. .

  22. Weird--thread won't move!
