  1. Hello, I'm an idiot who has only recently discovered downloading.

Is the wonderful "Speedbath" download album a forthcoming "official" Kristin Hersh release with spangly artwork and a retail price, or a CASH Music only statement about the power of the online commerce?

I feel guilty downloading this material for free. Is the "donation" option a place I can go to pretend to buy the album instead?

I should probably read more info on the website. Anyway, love the album. I'll also be at the Edinburgh show tomorrow. Ciao.

  2. The CASH tracks can be considered as a "works in progress" version of Speedbath. Kristin has been busy re-recording the album and it's planned for released later this year (I think we've been told June, I don't know if it will be ready by then though?). She's indicated (on Twitter) that Fifty Foot Rob would be playing the drums on some of the tracks. I can't wait to hear that.

  3. Jed,

Billy said on a post about two weeks ago that they are looking for an October release date for "Speedbath" - I think a "normal" and "deluxe" version if I'm not mistaken!

  4. There's no need to feel guilty as the opportunities to donate are all here. How about signing up as a Strange Angel, then you will never feel guilty again.

You may feel a little like a stalker who is given too much access to their victim, but hey, we all have our crosses to bear.

The WIP's in the online store are essential. Oh and welcome to the board.

  5. Thanks Pegasus! I guess I was not quite up to date on this.

  6. Billy,

As K still appears to be working on the "official" version of Speedbath, has the projected October release date now slipped?

  7. @Pegasus - No, we think it'll be mastered in the next three weeks...finished copies will be imminent after that.

  8. Hi Billy,

Sorry to be bumping this to the top again, but is there any firm(ish) date for the release of the album yet, please?

Also, is the "deluxe" version of it still on the books or has that idea now been shelved?

    Regards, P.

  9. We're still working on the 'deluxe' version - and it's almost done. Though, it might be more accurate to call it a collaborative art project - centered around Speedbath.

We've held the release of the record, pending the completion of the art project. Look for all the Speedbath stuff to be made available in late January...? I hope.

The special project is going to consist of a hand-crafted mahogany box, fabricated and fitted by reknown fine art framer, our own Beth Hill. The box alone will be an object of lust. It is a perfect piece of fetishy art all on its own. I've seen a prototype and I know. For those of you who don't know Beth, do yourself a favor - click the link and read her About page. She's one impressive chick.

The painter Yozo Suzuki is painting a portrait of Kristin for the project. Each box will contain a fine-art print of the portrait. But better than that, each box will also have one piece of the actual, original painting mounted on the lid. Each box owner will own a fraction of the original painting.

Inside the box will be the portrait print, vinyl and CD editions of Speedbath, and some special charged items inserted by Kristin. Used guitar picks and strings, pieces of lyric sheets and notes from her notebook, things she's carried around in her pockets for days...elements of the actual human being who made the music. Every box will be truly one of a kind and we won't be making many.

No, we haven't decided on a price yet - because we simply don't have a full picture of the costs at this time...suffice to say neither Beth, Yozo or Kristin are making these for the profits. The object of the exercise is to create something truly special, unique and personal and to see how that goes...

If we take pre-orders at all, it will only be after the boxes are fabricated and all elements delivered. We will not tolerate delays after pre-order and neither should you. The 10-4's have been a serious life lesson for us.

    More later...

  10. Wow! Sounds pretty stunning.

Reminds me of the 'Lonely is an Eyesore' very limited edition. Don't think I've even seen so much as a picture of one of them, so hopefully I can get one of these....

Tine's going to love the packing & posting :o)

  11. Billy,

These boxes sound incredible, but can I make a suggestion? I've noticed a trend in these deluxe sets lately to include the album(s) on multiple formats (the recent Pixies box set was the most absurd with the high end version including CD/DVD/Blu-ray and Vinyl all in one box. I'm not sure why they didn't throw cassettes and mini-discs in there too).

I'd wager that anyone who would be interested in purchasing one of these Speedbath boxes is probably already a Strange Angel and will get a CD copy of the album anyway, so including the CD in the box in addition to the vinyl would be redundant.

I don't mention this out of concern for what the boxes will cost us but for what they're going to cost you to produce, especially if you're only going to break even on them at best. If you can cut the CD and make a little more money (or lose a little less!) from the set, by all means do it.

Vinyl really is the way to go with these special sets because if you're going to do a physical product in this day and age of mp3's, vinyl makes for a much nicer package than a CD. That's why I loved that you did Power + Light as a vinyl only release. The mp3's and flac's are free so if you need to burn yourself a CD you can. If you want a physical item for your collection you can get the vinyl.

Looking forward to hearing more about this box...

    -Kevin S.

  12. Fantastic idea, hope I can get my hands on one! Thanks, Billy and Kristin, for putting so much effort into making something truly special for us.

  13. Billy,

    Thanks for the full update!

The deluxe box sounds fascinating! Oh, and just in case I get hold of one, please include the CD as planned! (Beestung's comments refer). I have now jettisoned my record deck so a CD-less version would be rather an indulgence! (And I don't like downloads very much!).

  14. I'm already coveting one of these so badly I can taste it.

As someone who really dislikes downloading anything because it seems so ephemeral and unreal, I find art sets and special editions that are lovingly compiled to be the pinnacle of physical music media.

I agree with Alistair that this sounds so much like the Lonely is an Eyesore mega-limited box (that I still long for 20 years after the fact). I love that Kristin and co. have found another way to make us feel immediately connected in a physical way to the person on the other side of the music.

  15. I would love to have one of these. They sound fantastic, but ultimately, I would be happy with hearing, and living, with the music. Even if I didn't have a little piece of Kristin.

  16. Yes, I'd love one of these, I need to start saving me thinks.
I trust they will be sent to the UK

  17. So... are you not releasing the regular version of Speedbath until January, too? :(

  18. Um, the drooling has commenced. Not to mention the hand rubbing. And penny saving.
This is so cool. I love all these artists' work. Can't wait to see the finished pieces.

  19. oh.my.frikking.god i am so desperate for this deluxe version i could scream!
