  1. I wasd flipping through my iPod tonight and it occurred to me again not just how good an album Strange Angels is, but how much it helped me through a bad time in my life when I was living alone in another country (OK part of the UK but an entirely different one) and how much that album helped me through that. I don't know why, but it somehow made me feel at home and much more relaxed. Don't get me wrong, I was surrounded by friends down there but you know how that can happen and you still feel as lonely as hell?

I guess I just want to say 'thanks' for such a wonderful album.

  2. still my favorite solo record, right after hips & makers. i know it has somewhat of a bad rep and kristin has mentioned she thinks it kind of sucks, but song for song it stands up for me far better than some of the others.

  3. Strange Angels has a few very good songs, but some parts of it just sound a little too "The Last Unicorn" in places. I'm thinking of "Gut Pagent". Otherwise, when I first bought it I only really liked "Shake" and "Pale", but I've started to like others, like "Rock Candy Brains" and "Cold Water Coming".

Maybe it's just a coincidence but, it's my least favorite KH album and "The Forgotten Arm" is my least favorite Aimee Mann album and both records have the same producer I think.

  4. "Strange Angels" is K's solo masterpiece, in my 'umble opinion!

It hangs together as a cohesive whole better than any other release (so far!)

  5. For me it's right up there--full of genius.

  6. Wow, didn't realise the album polarised opinion as much as that! I guess you either love it or you kinda.. not hate it, but dislike it!

For the record I loved the album immediately and there still isn't a song I dislike (I love the 'I quit' at the end as well - is great to end a compilation when you're introducing people to Kristin's work!). The review of the album that I did at the time for the paper I worked on back then (at a different one now, and back in Scotland) pretty much said that and I guess the people at 4AD loved me, since the music they were pushing was exactly the type of music I liked.

And a true story - I suggested to Carina Round that she should listen to Kristin and she liked it.

  7. Wow. This is the first I'm hearing of Strange Angels being a "black sheep" of sorts among K's solo stuff. I had no idea. I mean, "Gazebo Tree" is such a huge favorite among fans. I've always thought of it as being kind of similar to Hips & Makers, as far as production/mixing styles are concerned.

  8. This past week I was so depressed that for three days straight the only CDs I could listen to were 'Hips & Makers' and 'Strange Angels'. I listened to them in bed over and over again. I do this from time to time. The sparse acousticness of those two records (along with 'The Grotto') is so relaxing.

    Oh, how I love Kristin!

  9. That's funny Cup, that's how I got into Strange Angels last year. I was staying at my parents' house March 09 and there were only a few of my CDs there; I was depressed and a couple times each week I layed in bed and listened to it on headphones- that's how I found out that it had more good songs than I originally thought.

Still, you're lucky; I wish I'd had Hips and Makers to listen to too.

Anyway, I hope you're feeling better now.

  10. Wow. This is the first I'm hearing of Strange Angels being a "black sheep" of sorts among K's solo stuff.

I know, it's amazing to me--here's another kick in the teeth for you: it's K's least favorite album!

  11. Feeling a little better now, Xander. Thanks. (btw -Xander is my two year-old nephew's name too.) Excited to hear 'Crooked'. I currently have 'Slippershell' and 'Bliss' bedside on constant play. Feels right.

I think Kristin's recent work is the best music she has ever written and recorded. At least solo. The Muses demos are a real treat as well. She's so good to us!
