  1. I'm reading Rat Girl, and I realized that I have no idea what happened to Leslie after she left TM.

Did she join another band or leave music behind?

  2. Didn't Leslie record very briefly with The Wolfgang Press, who were also on 4AD? Or maybe it was another 4AD artist. I feel like I read this one day - somewhere.

  3. She did - on 'Queer'.

  4. Last I remember hearing, she was working as a social worker... in Boston? Not sure if I remember that correctly, and it was a couple of years ago that I heard it.

  5. @Alistair - that's right! :) and what a great album that is - and anything by the TWP really

  6. I've been listening to early TM (of course...) and noticed more acutely how great the bass line is.

Plus, I'll bet she really did live on sticks and leaves. I was just curious what she was up to.

Maybe she can cameo on the new record?

  7. Last i recall hearing [via this very website] is that she now lives in San Francisco, maybe has kids?, and is working on a dub reggae project... thats all i got.

  8. Leslie's a social worker and mom of twins, living in the Boston area. She's awesome.

  9. Fave rock bassist of all time, hands down.

  10. she made House Tornado. Just listened to the record the other day for the first time in ages, and was struck by K's voice and Leslie's bass. There just ain't words for that album. No words.

  11. rugan, it was House Tornado I was listening to, too!

  12. she also played in belly for a while.

  13. Thought that was Fred Abong?, I like the fact Kristin & Tanya work with same people again though.

  14. Yes that was Fred, not Leslie. I always thought is was cool that Tom Gorman played with Kristin during the Sky Motel era.

  15. andycherry was right, in fact Leslie played with Belly on the "Feed the Tree" b-sides ('Dream on Me' and the band version of 'Star'), she filled in for a while when Fred left for a couple of promo performances such as a live set on JBTV in 1994 right before Gail joined, something that Tanya announced there.

  16. That sounds right to me. It's a long time ago, and I'm sure I've asked about this before (& probably didn't listen for the answer), but I've got it into my head that I saw Leslie play bass for Belly in the UK - is that possible? It was somewhere in London, not one of the bigger venues, and they had The Moles and Bettie Serveert supporting...

    1993?

  18. That's right. Totally forgot about that. Sorry. I stand corrected. :)

  19. 1993?

you're right cwig, it was actually in 1993!

  20. Owen, possibly the gig you're referring to was in Camden, I forget the venue, but I remember Tanya striding onto stage in a one-piece three-quarter length lycra outfit - phoarrr! But then again it could have been another tour.

  21. I wonder if Leslie still plays bass ? I'd like so much to hear her sound again. She remains in my top 3 bass players, along with Phil King (Lush), and Mike Mills from REM.

  22. Thanks tim_G6. I don't think it was Camden though, because in my mind's eye the tube station platform was above ground. And I don't remember a "one-piece three-quarter length lycra outfit" either, unfortunately - the only clothing that sticks in my head was one of the guys in Bettie Serveert wearing an "Eat Beaver" teeshirt...

  23. If you try hard enough you can find her on the Web. I did, and emailed her - she was kind enough to reply but implied that she often didn't (and hoped she was anonymous/difficult to find). She cut her hair and got a proper job - some of us have to do that eventually - working in Boston as a therapist, dealing with 'stress'.
I agree that she was an astonishing bass player (I play bass myself & kinda know what I'm talking about) - I often use 'River' as an example of a perfect bass part, locked in with the kick when neccessary but able to wander off and experiment when appropriate. Absolutely the best thing about House Tornado (although it's a cracking album altogether, of course, it's just that Leslie is *outstandingly* good).
She implied that she doesn't play any more, and said she never listens to the old recordings. Pity - but I got a tweet from KH about her, and she said that 'she's happy'. That's what's important.

  24. Yes! Her work on River is astonishing!

I'm glad she's well, even if she doesn't want to play anymore.

  25. Aw, that's a bit sad. Leslie's bass work on House Tornado grabbed me at first listen, but have you guys ever payed attention to her bass work on the first album? I think the bass is a little less prominent in the mix on that one so you have to listen a bit more closely (maybe it's because of the acoustic-y, more 'stripped-down' guitar sound on House Tornado that the bass is more prevalent) but her bass work on the first album is just as wonderful. Her bass line on "Green" really blows me away. And yes, one of my all-time favorite bass players, my only other favorite being James McNew from Yo La Tengo.

  26. Leslie's bass work *is* astonishing... and ballsy. I'm particularly fond of the little punctuation mark she puts in "Pools in Eyes" - there's a little figure in there that sounds like a spring popping that I just ADORE.

  27. yes! ever since this has come up - that bassline has been popping into my head. At work. On the street, etc....
